Janis Elizabeth (DeRasmo) Girardi, daughter of Frances (Bracco) & Louis Coppo (predeceased), passed away at home on September 7, 2018, after a long illness, surrounded by the loves of her life – her husband and three children. She was 67 years old.

A 30+ year resident of Mahopac, New York, Janis was born and raised in the Italian-American community of East Harlem, New York City in 1951. She took great pleasure in being together with family over a home-cooked meal and sharing stories from her heart. She always had a smile and could make you laugh easily.

Janis had a natural talent as a seamstress, continuing the work of her family matriarchs, creating fancy dresses, beautiful home decorations and elaborate Halloween costumes for her granddaughters.

There was really nothing she could not do once she set her mind to it, whether it be teaching herself to cut and lay ceramic tile, installing a shower unit or faucet, or doing light carpentry work.

Janis retired 2 years ago after 25 years of service as a residential manager at The ARC of Westchester.

She and her loving husband of 23 years, Jay Girardi, rescued many furry children over the years, but it was Max, her 16-year-old Chihuahua, who never left her side, especially after she became ill. She and Jay loved putting the pups in their RV and hitting the road.

Janis is also survived by her sister Rosanne; brother, Joseph; son, Christopher and daughter-in-law, Jennifer DeRasmo of Fishkill, NY; son Michael and daughter-in-law, Meryl DeRasmo of CT; daughter, Carla DeRasmo & partner Ken Nercessian of Latham, NY; grandchildren, Nalene, Taryn, Abigail, Alexandra, Rosaria, Brianna & Lynev; two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews & cousins.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, September 11 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY, followed on Wednesday with a 10 AM mass at St. John the Evangelist Church at 221 East Lake Boulevard in Mahopac, NY, and final resting at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. One of Mom's last wishes was for you to wear colorful & cheerful attire as you say goodbye to her.

Special thanks to Dr. Jaqueline B. Stone and the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in White Plains, Dr. Craig M. Shannon at Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam.

In lieu of flowers, Janis would love for you to continue the work of saving animals with donations to The Putnam Humane Society, Carmel, NY: www.puthumane.org
