Helen Spencer Rieder passed away on March 1, 2017 at the age of 104. Helen was born on March 24, 1912 to Norman and Lena (Alexander) Spencer in Denver, Colorado. She married Wilfred Rieder in June of 1940. They subsequently moved east, completing their Master Degrees at Columbia Teachers College in NYC. They settled first in Roslyn, and then Glen Head Long Island where they raised their family. Helen was a respected 6th grade teacher in the Roslyn Public Schools until retirement in 1969. Helen was predeceased by her husband in 1986 and by her two brothers, Donald and Henry (Jack) Spencer. She is survived by her daughter Ann Brown in Delaware City, Delaware, her son Eric and his wife Phyllis in Mahopac, New York, six grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

Helen was a woman of many interests and talents. She was very concerned about the world she would be leaving behind for everyone's children. She was an active member of the AAUW and various U.N. agencies. She wrote papers, played the piano every day, and maintained a beautiful garden. She was a long time member of the Roslyn Presbyterian Church. She was a dear friend to many and the beloved matriarch of her family. She will be remembered for her wisdom, and her loving and caring ways.

Helen spent the last almost nine years at Waterview Nursing Home in Purdys where she was dearly loved and cared for and known to all as Gram. She is sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.

A memorial service will be held on April 29th at 11:00am at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac.
