Condolence & Memory Journal

Mrs. Daul was my first and second grade teacher from 2002-2003. So many of my formative memories from elementary school took place in her classroom. The science projects we did stick out in particular, especially the annual solar system museum! (I believe I presented "the Universe".) And all of the creatures she kept in her classroom! I loved that she made it completely acceptable for 6- and 7-year-old girls to enjoy all of the creepy crawlies she had, and that she gave responsibility to students to take care of her hamsters over vacations. (My family kept dwarf hamsters of our own for years after I took home Skittles the hamster one summer vacation.)

Mrs. Daul and I wrote letters to each other for many years after I left her class and it is remarkable how much she kept on giving. She shared so many wonderful books with me (Anne of Green Gables, The Tale of Despereaux, Small Steps to name a few), and whenever I recommended one in return, not only did she read it and share her thoughts with me, she would buy the book and donate it to my class's library so other students could enjoy it, too.

I knew what a talented teacher Mrs. Daul even in 1st and 2nd grade. I'm now finishing up my degree in music education and student teaching, and as I've gone through my education courses and have reflected on my own education, I continue to appreciate what a truly wonderful and unique woman Mrs. Daul was and I realize what an enormous imprint she's made on my life. I am deeply sorry to hear of her passing and am keeping her and her family in my thoughts.

I had Mrs. Daul for 2nd grade at Austin Road. She was so inventive + exciting in the classroom, someone who encouraged creativity/imagination just as much as the fundamentals. Mrs. Daul truly believed in me-- even after she retired we communicated via email about writing I was doing & what not. I'm currently in college studying to become a teacher myself because of the impact she had on my life. Such a special woman. She will be dearly missed. My condolances to her loved ones.

So, so sorry to hear this. The years have passed by so quickly-- I wish I could've stayed in touch with Marilyn... but life in general often divides us, especially when there's a great distance involved. I'm Bruce's second cousin. Bruce, my heartfelt sympathy on Marilyn's passing. In time the memories of the precious moments you spent together will bring you great joy. Meanwhile, I wish you strength in getting through the grief. Love, Ellie
