My Condolences at the passing of Modest. May he Rest In Peace

Posted by: Winslow Sargeant - WASHINGTON, DC - Coworker   Dec 19, 2018

First, my sincere sympathy to Linda and her daughters. I just learned of Modest's passing today. I pray that Linda and daughters are doing just fine (I know that Modest would not want it any other way)!

I read all of memories on Modest's obituary website, and it was heart warming to hear how Modest's personality was so endearing to many of his co-workers at IBM. Sorry if this sounds like a eulogy, but I clearly relate to the endearing

I am saddened to hear of Modest' passing. Only knew Modest for a brief period of time but he was a cheerful joy to be around.

Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time.

I was deeply saddened hearing about Modest's passing. I extend my condolences to his family and friends. I only worked directly with Modest from 1990-92. He was nevertheless instrumental in the way I today approach working and living, namely as a sandbox for grown ups. He taught me, through his enthusiasm and lets-always-have-fun approach, that work should be something that is enjoyable and comes easy, and even though one should take work seriously, living comes first. Every interaction with Modest

I am very sorry to hear about Modest's passing. Modest's ebullient enthusiasm for the work going on in our department helped convince me to join IBM instead of other companies, and my first few years in the department under his optimistic leadership were the source of many happy memories. All of us will miss his constant encouragement and inspiring words. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

My condolences to Modest's family on hearing this sad news. I was one of those who interviewed Modest on his application to IBM Research. It was immediately apparent that Modest was a great candidate and valuable asset to IBM. I am honored to have known Modest, and have worked with him for those years. He will be sorely missed.

It doesn't seem possible to accept that I will never again encounter Modest's cheery greeting, walking down the hallway at Yorktown. From the many years of working on his team to our less frequent recent interactions, I always cherished his generous and affectionate spirit which was paired with his upbeat attitude and sharp intellect.

My prayers are with his family, that they may find strength and peace in the many happy memories he left with us.

Although we started at IBM the same year, Modest was always a mentor, filling in the cracks of my world view with his never ending optimism and constant encouragement. The days when I worked with Modest were always happier ones. One more star has departed from the constellation of which he was such an integral part and the night sky will be forever changed.

Linda & Ashley (and, of course, Penny),
We've all lost so much with Modest's passing. Despite only knowing him a few years I consider him to be one of the best friends I ever had. Who would have guessed that this kind, gentle, loving, generous, unassuming man was a brilliant scientist, inventor, leader and teacher? He may have been a big fan of Spider-Man but to me Modest was the true super-hero - secret identity and all. For the rest of
